The story as related in GenesisJoseph's father Jacob favored him and gave Joseph the coat as a gift; as a result, he was envied by his brothers, who saw the special coat as an indication that Joseph would assume family leadership. His brothers' suspicion grew when Joseph told them of his two dreams (Genesis 37:11) in which all the brothers bowed down to him. The narrative tells that his brothers plotted against him when he was 17, and would have killed him had not the eldest brother Reuben interposed. He persuaded them instead to throw Joseph into a pit and secretly planned to rescue him later. However, while Reuben was absent, the others planned to sell him to a company of Ishmaelite merchants. When the passing Midianites arrived, the brothers dragged Joseph up and sold him to the merchants for 20 pieces of silver. The brothers then dipped Joseph's coat in goat blood and showed it to their father, saying that Joseph had been torn apart by wild beasts.

Joseph's coat, by Diego Velázquez (1630), depicts Joseph's brothers bringing the coat to their father Jacob and asking him to identify it.Recent scholarship, especially among literary critics, has noted how the exhortation to "identify" and the theme of recognition in Genesis 37:32-33 also appears in 38:25-26, in the story of Judah and Tamar. This serves to connect the chapters and unify the narrative. Victor Hamilton calls these "intentional literary parallels,"[10] while Robert Alter suggests that the verb "identify" plays "a crucial thematic role in the dénouement of the Joseph story when he confronts his brothers in Egypt, he recognizing them, they failing to recognize him."[11]

The envy of his brothers may also have stemmed from the fact that Joseph was the son of Rachel, Jacob's first love. However, Joseph's brothers were the sons of Rachel's older sister Leah and the sons of the handmaidens, who were given to Jacob during a time when Rachel could not conceive. There was a battle between Leah and Rachel to compete for Jacob's attention. Jacob had told Joseph, when he was seventeen years old, to go check on his brothers. Joseph would report back to his father of their evil deeds. In addition to this he shares his dreams of them bowing down to him. Their anger towards him only increased.
According to the Authorized King James Version, Genesis 37:3 reads:

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors.[1]
The Hebrew phrase Kethoneth passim is translated here as coat of many colors, but some have suggested that the phrase may merely mean a "coat with long sleeves"[2] or a "long coat with stripes."[citation needed]

The Septuagint translation of uses the word poikilos[3], which indicates "many coloured";[4] the Jewish Publication Society of America Version also employs the phrase "coat of many colors".[5] On the other hand, the Revised Standard Version translates Kethoneth passim as "a long robe with sleeves"[6] while the New International Version notes the translation difficulties in a footnote, and translates it as "a richly ornamented robe".[7]

Aryeh Kaplan, in The Living Torah gives a range of possible explanations:

Kethoneth passim in Hebrew. It was a royal garment; 2 Samuel 13:18 (cf. Ralbag ad loc.). The word passim can be translated as 'colorful' (Radak; Septuagint), embroidered (Ibn Ezra; Bachya; Ramban on Exodus 28:2), striped (Ibn Janach; Radak, Sherashim), or with pictures (Targum Yonathan). It can also denote a long garment, coming down to the palms of the hands (Rashbam; Ibn Ezra; Baaley Tosafoth; Bereshith Rabbah 84), and the feet (Lekach Tov). Alternatively, the word denotes the material out of which the coat was made, which was fine wool (Rashi) or silk (Ibn Janach). Hence, kethoneth passim, may be translated as 'a full-sleeved robe,' 'a coat of many colors,' 'a coat reaching to his feet,' 'an ornamented tunic,' 'a silk robe,' or 'a fine woolen cloak.'[8]
James Swanson suggests that the phrase indicates a "tunic or robe unique in design for showing special favor or relationship" and that "either the robe was very long-sleeved and extending to the feet, or a richly-ornamented tunic either of special color design or gold threading, both ornamental and not suitable for working."[9]

The phrase is used one other time in the Hebrew scriptures, to describe the garment worn by David's daughter Tamar in 2 Samuel 13:18-19.

Interestingly, a rainbow is primarily mentioned in only the first book (Genesis) and the last book (Revelation) of the Bible. A reference to a rainbow is also found in the first chapter of the book of Ezekiel.

In the Genesis account, a rainbow appears right after the great worldwide flood brought in order to remove sinful and evil-minded man from the earth. The rainbow symbolized God's mercy and the covenant He made with Noah (representing mankind) not to destroy the world in such a way again:

"And God said: 'This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

"'I set My RAINBOW in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the RAINBOW shall be seen in the cloud; and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. The RAINBOW shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.' ” (Genesis 9:12-16, NKJV throughout)

The cloud which has the rainbow set in it, in a way, pictures God, as Exodus 13 states:

"And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of CLOUD to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. " (Exodus 13:21)

Picture of a double rainbow inside an Alaskan National Park
In his first vision from God, known as the "wheel in the middle of a wheel" vision, the prophet Ezekiel compares the glory of God he saw with a rainbow:

"And above the firmament over their heads was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like a sapphire stone; on the likeness of the throne was a likeness with the appearance of a man high above it. Also from the appearance of His waist and upward I saw, as it were, the color of amber with the appearance of fire all around within it; and from the appearance of His waist and downward I saw, as it were, the appearance of fire with brightness all around.

"Like the appearance of a RAINBOW in a cloud on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the brightness all around it. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord . . . " (Ezekiel 1:26-28)

Rainbows appear again in the prophetic book of Revelation, which foretell the end of man's rule on the earth and the coming of Jesus to set up his Kingdom.

The first mention of a rainbow in Revelation appears when the apostle John uses it to describe the glory and power of God on his throne:

"After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, 'Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.' Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a RAINBOW around the throne, in appearance like an emerald." (Revelation 4:1-3)
The second mention of a rainbow occurs when John describes the look of a mighty angel:

"I saw still another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. And a RAINBOW was on his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire." (Revelation 10:1)

What about the COLORS of the Rainbow? What do they represent?
The most common colors seen by a normal human eye are, as listed by Issac Newton: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. In English, a popular way of remembering these colors is to memorize the name "Roy G. Biv."

There is no killing of any gays or sorcerers prescribed. I support gay rights on education, military, employment and prevention of Sharia but if Marriage is compromised we are so screwed!

The best technique for a gay person is to teach them the word. They will struggle, some will be exorcised while other will continue to rebel. It's the children's education at grave stake at this point because of the President's approval and only the citizen needs to proclaim their allegeance unto the vine.

I am not judging! I let them know the truth before all these moms support gay marriage for their sons and daughters content renouncing the very commandment of God. The gay marriage act is a rejection unto God. He will leave us if we do not promote Sanctity of Marriage! Josh is only human and just like all humans - We all need to learn from one another! Yes! He can support LGBT but only because Lesbians need gentlemen! Honey I kept AIDS patients alive!

Did God not create men and women?

Honey the gay churches think God is gay? All the characters of the bible became gay!

I'm preaching tolerance of God the creator of the Universe! I love God! I love the 10 commandments! Thou shall not Kill means don't kill your enemy! Don't kill Gays! Don't commit Suicide! This is cool by me! I agree with God! Thank YOu!

See You are all to serious! I love that Josh kiss all these Lesbians and play with them! In a gentleman fashion! They need good men! The world needs good men!

Gay as Phenomenal - I was laughing my feather tails off! That's a joke! Pen Oh! Men! Al! Josh calls gay men Men! Wake up folks! A little sense of You More won't hurt!

I encouraged Josh to show love to gays because I know they hate me on the web! Gays don't get God like I do! I love the Lord! In fact I risked my life on cyberspace for the Love of the Lord!

So as far as I'm concerned...I still love Josh and I get to spank all the gay butts!

See the enemy can't stand me because I know the Truth! And I'm cutter than the enemy!

Gays and Lesbians are lovable little bunnies too! They just don't know the truth and they are confused! Very very Confused!

Now remember Thou shall not Kill! Suicide is the devise of the enemy! Tell all the gays and bullies! I'm on your side! No suicide - Capito? Capish!

As for all the bullies - Where are the teachers and parents! Spank their butts! Send them home to parents for 3 days and do homework! Kick all bullies out of the class and let's learn the ABC of LOVE!

Love Yah even if YOU don't love me!
Cyber kisses to all!

Sincerely,
Jacqueline

"I" a Key!

Josh has shown his support toward the LGBT community over the years many times. Even going so far as to call the gay and lesbian community "phenomenal" after performing at President Obama's Inauguration concert with members of the D.C. Gay Men's Chorus!

It sounds like you should move to another country, if you are so unhappy with this ones government, people and musical artists.

Now I'm going to go back to Tony Bennett's new Duets II, how beautiful are Josh's vocals on "This Is All I Ask"???!!!

the world doesn't need more intolerance. stop advocating it. stop hating and condemning. just stop.

Well....I hate to tell you, but I'm pretty sure he does support it. He's extremely liberal in his politics. If you like Josh, you have to take him as he comes.

I love him, but we don't hold the same political or religious stand on probably anything.

I would recommend that you look to Josh as great entertainment, not affirmation in your religious views. No offense. :)
