moment of reflection

In light of yesterday's terrible tragic events, it is disheartening that in a time when we desperately need to come together as a nation to face the looming challenges ahead, it seems that just the opposite is happening, and that it is worse than it has been in a long time. Still, I am optimistic that the US will find a way to remain a beacon of strength, freedom, and hope for the world, though much work lies ahead.

Perhaps it is blind optimism, just as is my stubborn belief in the goodness of humanity. No matter how many times the universe bonks me on the head, telling me to wake up and see just how prevalent senseless acts of violence are in human society, how many seek to take advantage, to purposefully deceive for the wrong reasons, so heartbreaking to see no matter how big or small the situation-- there is simply no other way but to believe. The only difference between me now and me ten years ago is that before, I closed my eyes in order to believe. Now, I believe despite the fact that I see.

The saving grace in all of this is that if we look around, there are always others who remain dedicated to the good of this world that remind us that it is indeed worthwhile to keep the faith, and that we are never alone.
