Love from Afar

Who knew that just a single glance,
A darting, unexpected, shameless glance
Could be the beginning of endless pain.
Who knew that a smile,
An innocent, friendly, ignorant smile
Could pull my heart into this cruel game.

It was the passion behind those eyes,
As yours met mine.
It was the playfulness of your smile,
That made my heart begin to shine.
It was the thought of you and me together,
Until the end of all time.

My heart was meant to be your's,
Undoubtedly from the very start.
Each beat, each flutter, each rhythm,
Seemed to tear me apart.
There I was, ripped wide open,
Waiting for you to play your part.

But there was no second glance,
No reassurance that you meant to play.
You selfishly ripped out my heart
And left me there on display.
All I could do was stand and stare
As you unconsciously pushed me away.

Even today, after all this time,
You're the only one I can think of.
That beautiful smile, those deadly eyes,
All brought to my mind from heaven above.
Who knew my life could be so consumed
With something as painful as unrequited love.
