When I had found out that I had won the Road Reporter contest for the Boston show I was in shock. I was out to dinner with a friend at the time, casually reading my emails while waiting for our bill, and then I saw the headline that I had won and FREAKED OUT. To be honest, I had completely forgotten that I had signed up for the contest so when I had read the line about actually meeting Josh I literally threw my phone at my friend so hard she had thought that someone had died. Once I had finally recovered enough to digest the fact that I would be meeting Josh for the first time after 10 years of supporting the man, it was a bit overwhelming.

So finally it was the day of the concert, and I was a ball of emotions! I ran 17 miles in the morning, trying to give myself plenty of time to think about what I was going to say and work out some of my nerves!! I decided to take my mother with me for the meet and greet for if she had not been watching Ally McBeal that one faithful night I’m not sure if I’d have ever become quite as enamored with Josh from the ripe old age of 13.

We drove up from Rhode Island and got to the venue and ended up meeting up with some friends while waiting for our passes tickets. Since I had purchased the Silver VIP package we had to wait in an additional line to pick up those tickets once I had received my pass from the will call area. I was a bit nervous, since the passes said to meet at one place at 6:40 and we weren’t to get our tickets until 6:30 so naturally I was concerned about the time but it thankfully all worked out in the end.

For those of you that know me, you know that I’m a friend of Katy Perry, ultimately thanks to Josh quite a few years ago before Katy was KATY PERRY and now I help run and moderate her fan relations and fan boards, so I was debating whether telling him that I had known her and the whole backstory…I decided to text her and let her know that this meeting that had been 10 years in the making was finally going to happen for me because every time I see her she always asks if I had met THE Groban yet. Anyway, she wrote back that I HAD TO TELL HIM, she knew he’d love it. So far be it from me to deny the wishes of Katy, and when it came time to meet him, he seemed quite amused with my whole story, mentioning that they had talked earlier in the day and that she is an absolute doll (which I can completely confirm) he then signed a picture that I had taken and wished me well, it was really quick…but I finally got a coveted picture with him and from there on even though my legs were a bit tired from my morning run, I felt like I was floating on cloud nine.

I want to mention that I was really looking forward to the Press Pass portion of this contest, since I’ve have a strong interest in photography and enjoy shooting live shows. I went up to security in between ELEW and Josh as they were preparing the stage and asked what the guidelines were, as I’ve shot other and knew that typically the first 3 songs are granted for photos then the press is ushered out. They said that Josh would be starting in the middle of the arena for the first three songs, but after I could then approach the main stage and shoot from there for songs 4,5,6. Well when it came time to do so a new security guard came to my side as I was trying to take photos (crouched in front) and angrily told me that I had to return to my seat. I attempted to explain that I had a press pass and had already spoken with one of his coworkers giving me the all clear, but I was adamantly told that press was to shoot past stage B, (which was worse than my seats) so it was a bit embarrassing and I was somewhat frustrated, but I’m glad that I was allowed to bring my digital SLR camera and still manage to take a lot of photos from my seat.

Anyway, the concert was fantastic; Josh’s voice seemed stronger than I’ve ever heard it before. I enjoyed the mix between his older repertoire and the current album, I appreciated that he didn’t solely sing Illuminations from front to back, and fortunately sang some of my favorites like Per Te, Alejate, and February Song although I have to say that I did miss hearing Awake this time around. I really enjoyed his cover of Play Me as well at the end of the concert. Visually I really thought his set design and layout was a nice mix between the simplicity of the Before We Begin tour & Awake. I really enjoyed the lighting and one highlight that really stuck out to me is during Machine when all the top lighting fixtures rotated as the song was played. This really was a fantastic concert, one of the best I’ve been to for Josh and I’m so happy that I’m going to have the opportunity to see him again when he comes back in November to Rhode Island! Thank you so much for this opportunity!
