Island Iceskating & A Pig at My Christmas Party

Last week I went to an ice skating party at the only ice rink on Oahu. Our cousins had rented Ice Palace out for the evening and were paying for anything people got at the snack bar. I'm afraid I ate more than I skated. Even though I spent four years at college right outside of Chicago I only went skating a few times and am not a very good skater. I tend to push off my right foot and coast on the left, giving the impression that I am limping around the ice rink. But there's nothing like a cinnamon churro and a cup of hot chocolate to soothe a bruised ego.

The following day was the Christmas party for all diocesan staff members at the diocesan center, which is set back in the mountains in Kailua. While we were eating lunch some hunters emerged from the wooded area nearby with a large, bloody, and most certainly dead wild boar on their backs! (Pigs run wild in certain woodsy areas throughout Hawaii.) Guess they'll be having smoked kalua pig for Christmas dinner.

Last night I tried my hand at baking gingerbread cookies for the first time. The goal is to decorate half a dozen for each of the three other Herald staff members for Christmas. My two little cousins are going to help decorate some of them. They enjoyed seeing all the Christmas decorations at Honolulu Hale (City Hall) Sunday night, especially the snowman family in their Aloha attire and leis, and a gigantic barefoot Santa doing the "shaka" wave.

I still have lots of presents to wrap but that'll be fun with a little Christmas music in the background.
