I'm so naive sometimes....lol

My father left me an itinerary of their trip to Cambodia along with a phone number to their hotel. After I knew for sure they had gotten there, I just picked up the phone and dialed the number to their hotel.
I mean afterall....that's what I normally do when I want to reach someone.
Uh...nooooooo!
Not for Cambodia evidently. I had to get an international operator. She had to get the country code and dial the number for me. This hideous ring in my ear with static and crackling in the phone.
All of a sudden this small foreign voice answered on the other line. It was almost eerie. This person said nothing I could understand or hardly hear because it sounded like it was on the other side of the earth....and that's because it was.
"YES, MAY I HAVE THE ROOM FOR BRYCE CURTSINGER."
*foreign voice mumbling*
"BRYCE CURSTINGER, I NEED TO SPEAK WITH A CURTSINGER. CAN YOU PUT ME THROUGH TO THEM?"
*mumbling again, then another foreign person answers. Ahh, mumbling, ahh, mumbling*
ARE THERE NO PHONES IN THE ROOMS THERE?
*mumbling in a foreign language*
OK, THANKS ANYWAY.
Then I hung up the phone.
Seven minutes of nothing.
I pray to God that won't cost me a small fortune. I'm scared to see the next phone bill.

I can't get over how dingy I am sometimes. But who knew that in 2007 you couldn't just call up the other side of the earth?

This morning I had a message from my mom via a "satelite" phone. She sounded like she was across town. Amazing.
