Lil Baby

Lil's asleep on my lap as I write. Her full name is Lilith, but Lil seems to fit her pretty well now - it's a nickname, and it's an abbreviation of "little", which is what she is. I can put her in my bathrobe pocket, and I'm always afraid I'm going to step on or hurt her.
And yet it took my fiance and me a while to arrive at Lilith as a name for our kitten. Here are some others we discussed:
- Charlotte. As in Charlotte's Web, because she was running around like a little black spider.
- Min. A favorite character in a fantasy series we read.
- Selina. Taken from Selina Kyle, Catwoman's alter ego.
- Alice. Think "curiouser and curiouser" from Alice in Wonderland, and you'll see where I got this idea.

Thinking about names always gets me to thinking about a certain day. Growing up, I was the only one I knew who had the first name I did. Sometimes I'd wish for a more typical name. When I started writing, I even went so far as to think up a pen name to write anonymously. But when I went to that Virgin Megastore signing in 2003 and Josh Groban signed a CD to me, there was no name I wanted more than the one I had.
