Life's Cruelties

I'd say life's cruel jokes...but this is just no joke at all. One of Riley's friends at school (and one of the girls in my Girl Scout troop) was diagnosed at the beginning of their 2nd grade year last year with cancer. Inoperable. And she beat it. That was 9 months ago. Friday, her mom found another knot surrounded by 4 others in the same place the tumor was before. Well, we had Girl Scouts the day before and it was outside and it was very windy that day, so I was hopeful (even though I would have kind of been responsible) that maybe she just had some sort of infection. They went to the doctor yesterday and they decided that her scans that weren't supposed to be for another month or two would be done this week. The first 2 were today. And right off the bat, they have not only diagnosed her with a relapse, but it has spread and is going in a much worse direction. They aren't sure what they are going to do at this point...it is so soon...

All I know is that it is so so sad. There is nothing anyone can do to help at this point except to pray... The first time around, the whole community met the diagnosis with an outpouring of support and donations, fundraisers, and anything that would help. Now, so many jobs have been lost, and it's not just here--it's everywhere. I know St. Jude takes care of the children's expenses, but the expense on the family--not being able to work, etc. it's just so heartbreaking.

I just had to get it out in black and white...I don't know what to do other than to just be there for them. If anyone has any ideas for our Girl Scout troop to do in support, please let me know. I'm supposed to be the leader (and am friends with the girl's parents) and yet I'm just blank...
