New Car - Yes!

I did it. I bought a new car. It’s the Ford Escape. I’ve been happy with Ford for the past 10 years. I’m on my way to another ten.

My niece went car shopping with me. She has a Pontiac so we went to check out the Pontiac Vibe first but neither of us was impressed with it. The next size up also didn’t impress us. I did ask for a test drive but never got it. The salesman said he had to get some information from me first. I turned to face him and asked what he wanted to know. He said that we’d have to go inside where I would give him my name, address, phone number, driver’s license, email address, etc. I said no and that I expected to get a test drive without giving him the above information. He said it was required. I said “Too bad. You’re not getting it.” If I can’t get a test drive without giving my life history then I would leave. He tried the sympathy ploy by telling me that he was new and just following orders. I told him it wasn’t my problem. I would only give that information, excluding email address, if and when I was ready to make a purchase. He didn’t budge and neither did I. The nerve of some businesses to think they could demand I give personal information for a lousy test drive. It’s like handing over a credit card while window shopping.

We went to a Saturn dealership next and were not impressed. I had bought a compact Saturn sedan back in the late 1990’s. It was a good car but I realized too late that it was too small for me. I needed more leg room than it had. I couldn’t wait to finish paying it off so I could buy something larger. That was when I switched to Ford. Anyway, all the seats in all Saturn’s current vehicles are short. That was another part of the problem with my original Saturn and no way was I going to do that again.

I decided to look at the Ford vehicles. I didn’t want another Taurus but wanted something with some size. I travel with my mom’s wheel chair when we go places. I wanted something that could handle that and have some room left over. The Escape fit that bill. I’m pleased with my choice.

Now I have to figure out if mom and I can still go to Shreveport for a couple of days. I won’t go there on a holiday weekend. We’ll see if we can get a reasonably priced room for Wed. and Thursday this week. If not, Oklahoma here we come for a day trip!

God bless us, everyone!

6/30 Update:
I was determined to continue buying American. I don’t begrudge anyone else from buying what they want. I just knew that I wanted to support an American business in this bad economic time.

I’ve also decided that mom and I are going to check out the Winstar casino in OK, instead of going to Shreveport. We usually go to the Choctaw casino so this will be something different.
