War At Home
War At Home
Fallen brother he’s a fallen husband
He’s about to be woken in his hospital bed
He doesn’t want to rest
He just wants to run
And he’s tired of being told that he’s the lucky one
Caped crusader she’s newborn leader
But you should see her when her daughter’s on the phone
And she wipes the tears away
And she laces up because there’s still hell to pay
And it sure feels like hell today
And she says
You see these hands they’re bruised and brown
They’re yours alone
Hold on love we’re still going down
Hold on love we’re still fighting at home
The war at home
Innocence behind his broken expression
He’s a child of mercy he’s our unlearned lesson
And he’s trying to wake up
From this wilderness his world has now become
He’s reaching out to those he’s running from
And he says
You see these hands they’re bruised and brown
They’re yours alone
Hold on love we’re still going down
Hold on love we’re still fighting at home
The war at home
And it’s (one step forward and two steps back)
This is all who are marching
(one step forward two steps back)
This is young and old
(one step forward two steps back)
Through the void of silence
You are not alone
You see these hands their million strong
They are yours now
Hold on love we’re all going down

This is a great sad song, its brought tears to my eye and i shall have to change my day soft lenses.
I listen to "War at Home" on my way to work as a teacher. Having visited the VA hospital, I have wanted to do something to help, but didn't know what to do. When I listen to Josh's song, it makes me want to do SOMETHING, but I don't know what. In the creative writing class that I teach, I have had my students study the lyrics and write reactions. They are as moved as I am. Now they are working on creating a script using War at Home as the soundtrack. I am doing SOMETHING: Sharing the song with young people to help them think beyond themselves and expand their hearts more compassionately. I'll post the results in a month.
This is my favorite song out of all of the albums. It is so powerful and meaningful. It can bring me to tears and his voice is so amazing in this song especially.
At first, I did not like the song, because I thought it was pro-war, but then when I listened more closely I realized it was about the sufferings of the wounded. Then I liked it a lot. I think it is particularly powerful in the way it captures the PTSD experience.
I was in the kitchen cooking when I first heard this cut. It was really loud, so I ran and turned it down. I'm sure I wasn't really paying attention to the lyrics. You know how you "cherry pick" when listening to an album? How likely is it that you'll love them all? Not. I skipped over this one a couple of times, but doing so ruined the flow of the music. I don't like war and I don't like songs about war or movies about war. But I do honor those people who do what I know I wouldn't do. If it were left to me, we'd all be saluting the Queen of England or speaking German. (You gotta know your strengths.) So, I sat down and listened to the words. This song grew on me. To me, this is the one that took guts.
What a wonderful tribute, Josh. Thank you.
I have a son in Special Forces in the Air Force Combat Search and Rescue. He brought many home while being shot at himself. He made it out alive and came home to his 4 year old daughter. God Bless them all.
Painful, beautiful, hauntingly beautiful. I cried the first 2-3 times I heard this song. I still choke up, even after more times than I can count. Please let this be sung in your Sunrise, FL tour Oct. 26, 2011!! Deej
beautiful song about horiffic reality of war.
needs to become a Memorial Day or Veteran's Day anthem. It is one of my favorite songs. I am against war and you capture the sadness of our innocent youth being damaged by the ravagesof the wars we are in. Great that u journaled this experience and made it such a beautiful tribute.
It is good sometimes...friends and others need that shove... that look in the mirror...hopefully she found her something in herself to stand up.
It makes me sad to know and see...thank you for sharing it with others, I think.
This is an absolutely beautiful song that is very moving.
Deeply moved by this song. 90% of my neighbors are active duty, veterans or work for the DOD. God Bless our armed forces.
Great, truthful song
Brave!
Lovely sad song!
